We are Australia’s museum of the sea. A place to explore our relationship to the oceans, rivers and lakes around us and to dive deeper into the rich maritime heritage that binds us all. As an island nation, we have always been fascinated by the waters that surround us. The ocean, and its ever-shifting tides, have been central to our stories throughout time, shaping the Australian identity. By sharing these stories, we want to spark curiosity and conversations about how the sea shaped our world and continues to transform us today. Our purpose is to excite people about their connection to the sea, so they value it more.

Resident and Trade Union action in the 1970s saw the area, then threatened with redevelopment, preserved as an historic site and led to the enactment of heritage and planning legislation. The whole precinct was resumed for Government ownership in 1901, and remains in public ownership. Darling Harbour was a source of shellfish and other estuarine food for the Indigenous people of Sydney Harbour for over 20,000 years. In 1811 it became a major port for NSW’s coastal trade and shipbuilding. In 1813 mechanised industry was established here when John Dickson imported a rotative beam engine which was used to drive flour-milling, sawmill and brewing processes. The shores of Darling Harbour quickly developed as a centre of engineering with useful Deepwater Harbour facilities. By the mid-19th century Darling Harbour had an integrated port-rail network that connected with the inland. Technological developments in refrigeration meant that in the early 1880s frozen meat and fresh milk could be transported to Sydney for the local market, and also loaded onto refrigerated ships for export. Darling Harbour ceased to function as a working port in the early 1980s, and was subject to one of Australia’s most ambitious programs of urban renewal, opening to the public in 1988.

The Rocks was part of the traditional land of the Cadigal people of Sydney Harbour, with known occupation extending back at least 20,000 years. In January 1788 The Rocks became the site of the initial European settlement of Sydney and retains many of Sydney’s earliest constructions. Resident and Trade Union action in the 1970s saw the area, then threatened with redevelopment, preserved as an historic site and led to the enactment of heritage and planning legislation. The whole precinct was resumed for Government ownership in 1901, and remains in public ownership. Buildings and public domain are managed in line with Conservation Management Plans to ensure best-practice heritage protection and integrity, while managing adaptive reuse to ensure continued viability as an economically sustainable commercial centre.
